Moss Panel Price – How to Calculate the Cost per Panel and m²

The price of a moss panel isn't determined by the panel's dimensions alone. Moss type, design, backing material, quantity, cutting, packaging, shipping and any installation all determine what the finished solution costs. That's why a comparison per square metre is often fairer than comparing unit price alone.

Standard panels are the easiest to price, since the format and construction are already fixed. For a whole wall, custom dimensions, or a composition with several types of moss, you'll usually need a quote based on the actual surface area and installation site.

How to calculate a moss panel's price per m²

The unit price doesn't tell the whole story. A larger panel may cost more per piece but still be cheaper per covered square metre. Start by calculating the panel's surface area.

Example with a 50 × 50 cm panel

A 50 × 50 cm panel covers 0.25 m². That means four full panels are needed to cover 1 m², when the surface and pattern allow a straightforward installation.

If the unit price is, for example, P, the material cost for 1 m² in this example becomes 4 × P. Then add any costs not included in the panel price, such as shipping, custom cutting, fixings or installation.

Example of a wall that doesn't divide evenly

A wall that's 2.4 metres wide and 2 metres high has a surface area of 4.8 m². Dividing 4.8 by 0.25 gives 19.2 panels. Since panels are ordered as whole units, you'll need at least 20 panels before accounting for any cut-outs or pattern matching.

Seven factors that affect a moss panel's price

1. Panel size and coverage area

Larger panels require more material, but that doesn't automatically mean a higher price per m². The format also affects how quickly the wall can be installed and how many seams there are.

For a single decorative panel, the unit price is relevant. For a larger wall, you should compare the total material cost for the area to be covered.

2. Moss type and material combination

Reindeer moss, flat moss and bun moss each give a different texture and require different amounts of material and hand work. Reindeer moss gives an even, finely textured surface. Flat moss creates a calm base, while bun moss builds more relief.

Reindeer moss is botanically a lichen, not a moss, but is often included in what's commercially called moss panels. A mixed composition with several materials normally takes longer to build than an even panel with a single look.

3. Standard format or custom dimensions

A standard panel can be produced and packed following a repeatable process. Custom dimensions require more planning and can involve individual cutting, an adapted backing board, and extra checks before delivery.

Custom dimensions can still be economically reasonable if they reduce waste, solve a difficult wall surface, or make the installation fit exactly between fixed details.

4. Complexity of the design

A single-colour panel with an even texture is less labour-intensive than a composition with differences in level, colour fields, organic lines, or integrated plants. Logos, lettering and cut-outs also require custom sizing and more installation work.

5. Backing material and panel construction

The price is also affected by what the moss is mounted on. The backing material determines the panel's stability, weight, handling, and how it's fixed to the wall.

In some of Forever Flora's panel-based solutions, a heavy-duty foam backing with a 2,000 gsm specification is used. That figure refers to the areal weight of the foam/backing material. It does not describe the amount of moss per m² and is not a certified acoustic value.

6. Quantity and the scope of the project

A larger order can lead to more efficient production, but a lower unit price shouldn't be taken for granted. Complexity, delivery logistics, customisation and installation can weigh more heavily than the number of panels.

Ask for a total price for the whole project instead of assuming a certain volume automatically brings a discount.

7. Packaging, shipping and installation

Moss panels need to be packed so the surface is protected from pressure and moisture during transport. Large or relief-built panels may require more packaging than flat standard products.

If installation is included, the price is affected by wall material, working height, access, distance, the need for a lift or scaffolding, and whether the work has to be done outside regular opening hours.

What should be included when comparing prices?

Two quotes can look similar but cover completely different things. Ask for a clear breakdown so you're comparing the same delivery.

Moss panel, moss art panel, or a custom-built moss wall?

The lowest unit price isn't always the most suitable choice. Choose your solution based on the surface area, the desired look, and how much customisation the project requires.

A modular panel wall can have a lower starting cost and be easier to change later. A custom-built wall, on the other hand, can give a more cohesive result and solve surfaces where standard dimensions would create many visible seams.

What do you get for your money?

An even, well-finished surface

Check whether the backing material is visible between the moss sections and whether the panel's edges are well finished. Even coverage is especially important when several panels are mounted side by side.

A sturdy construction

The panel should withstand normal transport and installation without its shape changing. The bond between the moss and the backing material needs to be suited to the materials' weight and texture.

Realistic care and lifespan information

Preserved moss doesn't need to be watered or have grow light, but it isn't insensitive to its surroundings. Direct sun, high humidity, water, strong heat and repeated touching can affect colour and shape.

It's therefore not possible to promise an exact visual lifespan for every environment. A well-made panel can stay decorative for several years under suitable indoor conditions, but natural variation and gradual change are normal.

Clear information on acoustics and fire safety

Moss and porous backing materials can help break up or absorb certain sound reflections, but the effect depends on the whole construction, the panels' surface, and their placement in the room. A moss panel does not provide soundproofing between rooms.

How to get a more accurate quote

The better the information you send, the easier it becomes to avoid assumptions and extra costs later.

1. State the wall's width and height. Also mark the base, ceiling trim, doors and windows.
2. Send straight-on photos of the whole surface. Include a close-up of the wall material if possible.
3. Mark outlets and fixed installations. State their dimensions and position from the nearest edge.
4. Describe the desired look. Choose between even reindeer moss, flat moss, bun moss, or a mixed composition.
5. State the delivery location and floor level. Mention any lift, stairs, loading zone and restricted working hours.
6. Clarify whether installation should be included. This way, material, travel, working time and equipment can be itemised separately.
7. Mention technical requirements early. Fire, acoustic or material requirements must be addressed before production is decided.
